The United States needs a new generation of non-strategic nuclear weapons of various yields so that Washington has options to escalate during a potential nuclear war, according to U.S. Strategic Command. That is the reason that the Trump Administration’s Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) calls for the development of new low yield nuclear weapons.“While our nuclear posture is successful in deterring our adversaries today, we require a mix of yields and improved platforms to credibly deter the threats of the near future,” Gen. John E. Hyten, commander of U.S. Strategic Command told the Senate Armed Services Committee on April 4 in his written testimony. – The National Interest
